What is a white label?

When a company produces an untagged or unlabeled product so that another company can place their label, market and sell it as if it were there; such a company is said to have done “white label”. For instance, company A makes a product and takes it to company B, but company A places no tag showing this product has been manufactured by them. Company B picks up the product and tags it as though they manufactured it and goes to market and sell the product.

Although this is a typology of what it is in the digital world it’s not actually the case. In search engine marketing, white label purchases the services of a white label company and render those services to the customers under their brand.

In practice, the owner of such service would be contracted and they will render their services on behalf of the company who has purchased the while label to the clients. Some of the services white labeled include search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click (PPC) management, social media marketing, online reputation management (ORM), etc. It is comparable to the outsourcing of a project to another company but in the end, it is credited to the initial company.

Search engine marketing (SEM): though in the past SEM was used to refer to both SEO and other paid search activities, there has been a margin between paid search activities and SEO which are unpaid. This includes paid search ads, pay per click, cost per click, cost per thousand impressions, example of which include Google AdWords, Bing Ads, Yahoo! Search Ads, etc.

Search engine optimization (SEO): this is the act of increasing the quality and quantity of traffic attracted to your website via search engine which offers free services better known as organic search engines. For instance, if you are offering medical services online and you attract all the traffic but majority of which are from clients which seek the service of electrical appliances, then, the traffic would be wasted, SEO ensures the needed traffic is directed to those who can provide such services.

Pay per click (PPC) management

This is an internet service in which an advert is clicked an amount is paid to the ad owner. This is a way of attracting traffic or buying traffic rather than the organic search engine procedure.

Social media marketing (SMM)

This is the use of social media platforms and their paid extra value services to promote. With the help of some built-in tools, these platforms enable users of these services to track the results of their activities and know the impact of their paid adverts.

Online Reputation Management (ORM)

This is act monitoring or mitigating search engine result pages as well as an online mention in web pages and content. It is very important to companies how they are perceived when a search is performed on them online, this is a way they pay their way to how they are perceived.
